Three Weeks Home

Tonight marks three weeks home after three weeks in a hospital.
You can imagine which one is better.
I think of the things that went on during those weeks in Little Rock. I have journals, notes, records.
Same for the time here at home. So much goes on.
Home has long been my refuge. Glad we are here, away from hourly pokes and prods. Away from cafeteria food and prices. Away from parking garages and interstates. Laundromats and family shower rooms.
Here there are dogs who stick close to the steps now, hummingbirds who wait patiently, gardenias in full bloom.
There’s something cooking in the kitchen everyday. The hum of my own washing machine. The creak of the front door. Back-porch windows.
The days run differently here. There’s a simplicity and freedom. I cherish it.
