Happy 2024!

This year, I hope to continue posting seven small (and big) things from recent days that I’m grateful for, but in addition to that, I’m planning to add a line or quote or verse from some current read.

This week’s choice has been in my stacks for years and includes many rich poems, but today I choose “Return”…maybe because a new year is similar to a re-entry after a vacation. Maybe we have been celebrating. Maybe now we have to come down. Maybe the poem has nothing to do with that. I’ll post it and maybe you’ll give it a read:

Return by Naomi Shihab Nye

Build my home here

On the spot of old time.

I’m sure I have failed you

One thousand ways,

You ancient clock,

You stockpot of moments.

Look how the first thing I do

Upon entering the house

Is remove my watch

It’s in your honor.

Fuel by Naomi Nye

So, poems. Other goodnesses lately:

Chex mix aka “trash” in these parts —delectable, savory, spicy treat.

Homemade pound cake —all the holiday food remnants beckoning for a few more tastes

Jon Batiste —musical genius

Camelias, winterberries, holly—all the winter bloomers

Forecasts for snow—still brings a smile

and those long airport hugs and kisses that have to last awhile—-grateful for daughter time this season.

Be kind to yourself this year, wherever you find yourself on 2024’s map.

I adopted a new artist word for the year: capacity. For me, it means paying attention to all I need and want, and all I hope to (and have to) let go. 🙌🏼🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟✨

Be well. ✌️

Happy NewYear! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

Here’s to a bold and bright and beautiful year.

Some things I am grateful for recently:

The pull of needle through thread

Thumbing through new cookbooks

Marks on paper with a Blackwing pencil

Sifting through photographs from past holidays

Losing track of days and hours during these “after Christmas —before return to work”days

Starting a new journal on this first day of the new year, a gift courtesy of my eldest grandchild✍🏼

Echoes of this season…they are already history, already in the storehouse of Christmas Past, yet they linger: laughter, smiles, conversations, moments and making of memories.

A bouquet for us as we start the new year…my daughter and I hosted a small gathering on New Year’s Eve, and I said how I wished we had some fresh flowers. Not long after, here comes a dear friend carrying a vase full. Life is good like that. May it continue 🌟

Peonies and carnations to start 2023

Friday’s Five

1. See that cardinal? It was a welcome visitor this week, and I was lucky to get this shot through the window.

2. Texas weather. High in 60s today. Tomorrow? 40s. That means a possibility of a fire in the wood burning stove. And homemade soup. (That’s 3 things. Oh well.)

3.  I began the Documented Life Project 2016 with several other art friends. It’s a creative promise I made and it will be fun to see how it evolves.

 4. Knit shawl in progress. Almost off the needles !

5. This sweetie turned 5 months yesterday. Saved the best for last this week.

Friday’s Five

Happy New Year! I am going to try to get back on track with this blog in 2016. Here’s to a year of art and travel and words. I am not usually a maker  of resolutions, but I like these. More. A year of abundance of good things. May we all have that. Amen.

Light more candles.

Draw more pictures.

Pick more flowers.

Write more letters.

Read more books.
